Service-learning is an approach to teaching and learning in which students use academic knowledge and skills to address genuine community needs. Throughout a student’s career at TGS they will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Service Learning Projects. Prior to graduation, each student will need to design and complete a Service Learning Project tied to Learning Targets to meet a local need in their home country.

What is  a meaningful community project that I can provide to meet the needs of my local community?

For my service learning, I decided to volunteer at Siamsin Learning Centre; a school for refugee children from Myanmar. Malaysia hosts one of the largest urban populations of refugees in the world, and there are tens of thousands of children who do not have access to education. I taught classes, gathered resources to give to them, and lead workshops to inspire them to learn beyond the classroom.

To share my experience, I created a presentation. It explains my process, the pluses, challenges, and takeaways for the future.
