Inside Out

InsideOut is TGS’s holistic wellness program.  Wellness at TGS is an all-inclusive term that encompasses one’s social, emotional, and physical wellbeing. This program was built with the intention to see all students embark on a path towards self-discovery with the belief that the better one knows oneself, the better one can understand others and the world at large. This program will equip students with the skills they need to persevere and grow in the face of failure, use uncertainty to create opportunity, channel their sense of awe and curiosity, and ultimately, lead with a passion for the purpose for the greater good.

As travelers we have the unique opportunity to see and experience cultural differences first hand. With this comes a sense of responsibility to ask the more difficult questions about the human condition. It is the understanding of what drives us and repels us that then connects us. As we continue to lift the proverbial veil we begin to see a reflection of ourselves in others. These self-inquiry based practices drive us to question others’ motives and actions before making poor and possibly inaccurate assumptions. Through the process of asking questions about the human condition we not only expose areas of ourselves that help us shape future decisions, but we tend to cultivate a level of empathy that increases our ability to lead with compassion and curiosity.

This term we look to understand ourselves and others through the lens of culture. Examining cultural identity unveils how we see, treat, and think about others. We begin by perusing the difference between surface culture and deep culture. We make this personal and investigate what deep culture means to us. Moving into week two, we attempt to uncover unconscious bias and see if we can acknowledge our own blindspots. Week three takes us to the culturally driven "ideal" self, where we question the inner versus outer self in the age of the selfie. After delving into the ideal self we hit fast forward and look at the future self, intrinsic motivation, and what drives us. Each lesson includes formatives that ask you to take a closer look at why we act, think, feel, and even judge the way we do. By the end of term you will use these formatives to create a multi-dimensional collage in any way that suits you best.

How does your culture affect your overall sense of self and wellbeing?

Summative Piece

One of the formatives was to create video journals in order to reflect on what has happened and to keep in order to measure our progress.

Most of this module is about discovering yourself by learning about the world around you. With that being said, most of the product is how you decide to implement it in your own life, rather than a formal final piece.
