Project
Journey Home

The World Bank estimates that in 2030, 70% of China’s population will live in urban centers—roughly one billion people. But only decades ago, the citizens of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) mostly lived in rural mainly agricultural communities. Today, up to 287 million migrant workers have left their rural homes to live in urban centers in pursuit of gainful employment, sometimes only to return home during the great internal migration of Chinese New Year. These families are now separated by hundreds or thousands of miles in the search for a livelihood, but what is the cultural cost? Students will study issues of migration, internal and international, through literature, mathematics, history, human geography, and anthropology in order to better understand the movement of people into, out of, and throughout China.
What are the untold personal stories behind mass migrations and how can we make these stories matter?
Module Overview
Summative Piece

We will create a story of the personal journey of a Chinese migrant. They will have a choice of the medium (for example: fictional written story, art piece, podcast - with interviews, mathematical models representing the predictions of people’s lives, or anything else they decide).
Personal Story

In order to reach a larger audience, we needed to use a medium that was unique and interesting, so we decided to create an audio experience with silent acting.
