We looked at how India has contributed to math, capturing that at a local level in Mumbai, then looking at how the advances in math were received by other countries and scholars.

How can we use photography to visualize math?

Worlds of Work

Prior to my arrival in India, I didn’t know what to expect, especially when thinking about looking at it through my camera lens. After navigating through the never ending local motion of the bustling city, I couldn’t help but notice the remarkable work ethic of those around me. From fruit vendors, to block printing masters, I was captivated by their individual diligence towards their jobs. These incredible men photographed reflect mathematicians and their powerful contributions to modern day mathematics. Just like Ramanujan or Bharkava, the passion and dedication present in their work is exemplary, and provides inspiration for us all.

With these captured moments, there’s one thing that I’ll take away from it all: when asked if their picture could be taken, their eyes gazing into the lens and filled to the brim with honour, I knew I was given the special invitation of entering their world. Even though I was standing there with them for just a few seconds, it was enough to appreciate that I got to be a part of their realms of passion.

Reflection: Core Value

This project set a great example for my future path at TGS by enhancing my relationship with the core value meraki. The men I photographed put their all into their work, and I will take inspiration for my career.
